Twilight Football

GTMS were recently invited by Smartfusion to carry out the build production on four of the seven events of a Sony Global project called Sony Twilight Football.

On the 22nd and 23rd September, a series of seven games of football were played in seven of the world's most breathtaking locations at Twilight. The games took place at the hour of twilight on 4 of the 7 continents of the world, including a grand finale in South Africa home to the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Each location was chosen for its outstanding beauty and setting rather than any natural suitability for football, so in some cases the playing conditions presented an interesting challenge to the players. For the photographers however, nature provided an incredible backdrop to showcase the camera technology from Sony. The locations were Venice in Italy ;Zermatt in the Swiss Alps; Antequera bullring in Spain; Tintagel in the UK; Iguazu Falls in Argentina; The Pinnacle Desert in Australia and the Aquila game reserve in South Africa

GTMS produced and installed the pitch and other infrastructure elements in the UK; Spain; Italy and Switzerland. Varying from building on a glacier; floating on the Grand Canal in Venice; building in a castle ruin in Tintagel and building on sand in a bullring in Antequera, Spain; combined with supplying the pitch kit for Argentina.

The design and construction of the pitches, the production of the branding and installation for the European part of the project was carried out in-house by GTMS, along with consultancy on the event health and safety operation and documentation. Additionally GTMS supplied and installed Camp Twilight for the UK, which consisted of a 12m x 6m marquee, dressing & furniture, lighting, changing rooms and base camp for operations

The Venice pitch was floated on a 32m x 22m steel sectioned pontoon. The 25m x 15m pitch was constructed on top of the pontoon using 170 sheets of 18mm ply, 1km of wooden batten, 450 square metres of black astro turf. 5mm clear polycarbonate sheets were used as side panels and custom made aluminium brackets made to support them.

"It was a fantastic opportunity for GTMS to be part of this spectacular global event" said Dominik Short, Director at GTMS. "Having been chosen for our expertise and ability to deliver this simultaneously across Europe, it was physically demanding for everyone involved in the project; I am very proud of the team behind making this a huge success".

Jodie McCormac, Head of Production, Smart Fusion Live

It was great working with you guys. I think for me, as I completely trust GTMS in terms of production, it made the job that one bit less stressful knowing that you were working on it both in pre-production and at event stage. It also meant one less company I had to hand hold, which in this particular job, there were a lot! It's been great working with you and thank you for being there when it was really needed!
